FON's free wifi hits Geneva
Geneva, Switzerland (RSR, Fre) - Geneva's plans to create an Internet connected community has moved a step ahead, with the city's announcement that 500 citizens will be invited to join Fon Geneva, the international wifi community, free of charge in return for making their own wifi connection free to others in Geneva. Fon is a Spanish company whose founder Martin Varsavsky has spent much time in Geneva, has made waves in the Internet industry for separating public and private wifi signals, making it possible to safely provide very cheap or free Internet access to large numbers of people.
This is the second phase of Geneva's wifi project: the first was completed in June when the city set up several wifi access points in parks and other public areas.
